STRUCTURE OF ZIPPER

Zippers are divided into three major parts: the slider, teeth and tape.

THE SLIDER

The slider joins or separates the elements when the zipper is opened or closed. Various types of sliders are available depending on use.

THE TEETH

Small pieces (metal or plastic) applied to the sides of the two facing tapes, shaped so as to fasten and to release when the slider is moved. Two rows of teeth coupled as described, are called a "chain".

THE TAPE

It is the fabric support on which the small teeth of the chain are applied: the zip fastener is composed of two combined toothed tapes. A sequence of small teeth applied to one single tape is called a "half chain".

TAB OR PULLER

The movable and prehensile part of the slider.

TOP STOP

Two devices affixed to the bottom end of a zipper, to prevent the slider from coming off the chain.

BOTTOM STOP

A device affixed to the bottom end of a zipper, to prevent further movement of the half of the zipper from separating.

OPEN END (NOT SHOWN ON PICTURE)

This device replaces the bottom stop. It allows the two half chains to separate completely. The mechanism is based on the union or separation of the two elements called the "box" and the "pin".
